Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a participant in the DFN Project SEARCH programme, working in partnership with Greenbank and City of Liverpool colleges together with HFT job coaches. The project delivers employability and life skills training as well as real life work experience for young adults with a learning disability, autism spectrum condition or both.

Our Liverpool Nature Recovery Ranger, Nick White is actively involved in the project providing placements for interns wishing to gain experience in nature conservation and woodland management. His contribution to the programme was recognised at this year’s Supported Intern Graduation Ceremony where he received the Project Search Mentor Award.

Bhumika Palni, HFT Employability Coach says: “Nick’s dedication and commitment to our vision of supporting individuals with learning disabilities, neurodivergency and other complex needs have made a profound impact.

“Nick was recognised for his remarkable work with one of our interns, SA, who is autistic and had a keen interest in a gardening placement. Initially, finding the right mentor for SA was challenging as he required a mentor who could understand his specific needs, such as adhering to a precise schedule and having clear plans in advance.

“What truly sets Nick apart is his ability to provide the inclusive, individualised support that SA needed. While most of our interns benefit from the collective efforts of an entire team, Nick managed SA’s placement entirely on his own. This makes Nick’s achievement even more remarkable as creating an inclusive environment and understanding the unique needs of each intern can be challenging even for a team.

“Despite a demanding schedule and workload, Nick ensured SA’s success through his dedicated mentorship. He guided SA every day, often extending his hours to ensure SA met the necessary requirements to graduate. Nick’s exceptional management skills were evident in the personalised monthly timetable he created for SA, complete with pictures to provide clear guidance for the weeks ahead. His constant communication and quick responses to any changes ensured that SA felt supported and informed at all times.

“Under Nick’s solo mentorship, SA made remarkable progress. Not only did SA graduate successfully, but he also received the award for the most progressed intern this year. SA developed numerous employability skills and is now on the brink of securing employment. Nick’s support did not end with the placement; he continues to engage SA in volunteering activities, further nurturing his development.

“Nick’s dedication and unwavering support make him a standout mentor and manager. His ability to provide personalised, compassionate support on his own highlights his extraordinary capabilities. His efforts have not only benefited SA but have also enriched the entire DFN Project SEARCH community. Mentors like Nick are crucial to the success of our programme and to creating an inclusive world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

“Thank you, Nick, for making a difference and for your remarkable contribution to our programme.”
