Lerwick Community Wellbeing Garden was started in 2024 by volunteers from the Gilbert Bain Hospital, Mental Health Team and Health Centre as a green space for everyone to enjoy. They joined the NHS Forest in 2024.

So far they have:
– Planted 100 native trees provided by Shetland Amenity Trust and the Woodland Trust to create a mini woodland and surrounding meadow to encourage wildlife and create shelter
– Built and planted raised beds and flower beds from recycled materials, and enjoyed the fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers they have produced
– Made usable seating areas and paths so that the area is more accessible
– Received donations of plants, tools and skills from local people and businesses
– Had dinners, games, BBQs and many cups of tea in the garden

A diverse community from across NHS Shetland have all contributed to the garden. It is a great way to connect with staff from across the trust who we otherwise may not meet. There are lots of opportunities for volunteers and visitors to learn from each other and share skills including food growing, DIY, and biodiversity promotion. The garden promotes wellbeing by providing a lovely spot to spend time outside, have a break and enjoy the sea view!
