Derriford Hospital is a large teaching hospital providing services including paediatric oncology and maternity care. The trust joined the NHS Forest in 2013 when it planted a number of trees. Derriford Hospital is home to the Bircham Valley Nature Reserve and a wildlife pond. Located at the rear of the hospital, these give patients, visitors and staff access to 23 hectares of outdoor open green spaces.

An avenue containing 65 native tree species is separated from the wildlife pond by a woodland path. When fully mature, the avenue will form part of the nature walk from Bircham Nature Reserve (owned and managed by the trust) alongside the pond and on to the rest of the site.
