NHS Sustainability Day of Action is on 8 July this year and healthcare professionals across the UK have a unique opportunity to contribute to a more sustainable, healthier future. This annual event celebrates sustainable development within the NHS. We think this is an ideal time to take action for health, biodiversity and the climate by joining the NHS Forest. Here are six things you can do right now to take action.
- Sign up to plant trees. By signing up to plant trees, including the innovative Tiny Healthy Forests project delivered in collaboration with Earthwatch, healthcare sites can significantly enhance their green spaces, benefiting both the environment and the wellbeing of patients, staff and visitors. These green areas not only improve air quality and biodiversity but also provide peaceful spaces for relaxation and recovery.
- Join us. We encourage all NHS sites to register with the NHS Forest alliance and become part of this growing network of healthcare providers committed to sustainability. By doing so, you’ll gain access to resources, support, and a community of like-minded professionals dedicated to creating greener healthcare environments.
- Volunteers. For those looking to get more involved, consider registering your site on our volunteer matching scheme. This platform connects healthcare facilities with enthusiastic volunteers eager to contribute to greening projects. Alternatively, individuals can sign up to hear about volunteering opportunities in their area, allowing everyone to play a part in this vital initiative.
- Donate. Financial support is crucial for the success of these projects. We invite you to consider donating to the NHS Forest. Your support helps healthcare sites across the UK develop their green spaces. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference in creating healthier, more sustainable healthcare environments.
- Keep up-to-date. To stay informed and engaged, sign up for the NHS Forest Newsletter and join the Green Space for Health Susnet. These resources provide updates on upcoming events, success stories, and best practices in healthcare sustainability.
- Meet others. Don’t miss the opportunity to participate in the NHS Forest Conference, where you can learn from experts and share experiences with peers. You can book your free space now. Additionally, consider submitting a nomination for the NHS Forest Awards to recognise outstanding efforts in healthcare sustainability.
By doing something active on this Sustainability Day of Action, we can work together to ensure an NHS that is not only fit for the future but also leads the way in environmental stewardship. Let’s plant trees, create green spaces and build a more sustainable healthcare system for generations to come.
