The University Hospital of North Staffordshire NHS Trust have planted over 12,000 trees as part of the creation of a new hospital site.

For the past few years, the trust has been undergoing extensive redevelopment to its sites. This work includes brand new hospital buildings and a movement of activity from three sites to one site at the City General. As part of the development the trust has taken the opportunity to increase the number of trees across the site, in order to make the spaces surrounding the buildings greener and more attractive for patients, staff and visitors.

In addition to planting on the boundaries and in landscaped areas, trees have also been planted in circulation spaces. Pictured is the main entrance piazza where, once established, trees will provide shade for the seating areas encouraging rest and relaxation.

Species such as oak, ash, rowan, birch, hazel and beech have been used extensively, with a massive 12,452 trees already planted and another 18,796 planned as the development reaches conclusion.
