On NHS Sustainability Day of Action, 28th March 2013, hundreds of trees were planted across 23 hospital sites as part of the NHS Forest Scheme.
Many of our sites braved the cold weather to take part in tree planting with Lanacashire Care NHS Trust launching their Grow Your Own Initiative too. 23 NHS Forest sites, from teaching hospitals to mental health trusts planted hundreds of trees at 2pm to demonstrate their commitment to increasing green space for staff, patients and the local community to use and enjoy for rest, relaxation and exercise.
The Great Outdoor Gym Company Ltd (TGO) has sponsored the planting of 250 trees for today’s initiative as part of their on going commitment of planting one tree for every one of their British made outdoor gym pieces sold. TGO’s gyms have proven to have preventative health benefits getting new people into sustained activity in an environmentally friendly way and so there is a natural fit with Sustainable healthcare.
NHS Sustainability Day is an international event aimed at healthcare organisations taking action on climate change. For the second year running the event is being supported by NHS Forest who are running their '2@2' campaign, encouraging all organisations within the NHS to plant 2 trees at 2pm. This year we doubled last years numbers, improving biodiversity to even the inner most city sites and increasing resilience to climate change for future generations.
The sites involved included:
Airedale NHS Trust
Coventry University Hospital Trust
Barts Healthcare (planting at Whipps Cross, The Royal London and Newham University Hospital Trust)
